It was a great pleasure to organise an afternoon outing for the Danish Embassy.

We met them at their new Yanqi Lake facility and then headed out to Huanghuacheng for a short hike.

The first stop was the ancient fortress at Yaoziyu, built in 1592 and where the Ming Dynasty soldiers used to live.

After a short visit to the fortress our hike leaders took everyone up to the Great Wall, following countryside trails through chestnut orchards.

We arrived just in time to catch the lovely light for a group photo, and after that the hikers spent some time to explore the Great Wall.

The hike finished at Zhuangdaokou, another small village. From there it was a short drive on our buses to arrive at a local restaurant for a post-hike celebration.

The celebration started with champagne, snacks, and toasts on a rooftop with views of the Great Wall, and then moved downstairs for the dumplings and a big dinner – including all those tasty dumplings!

The date of the trip, December 7, was perfect for dumplings—it was Lidong, the Beginning of Winter solar term, one of those days when you’re supposed to eat dumplings!
